چکیده

There are few reports in the literature (1--4) on the pyrogenicity of streptococci or streptococcal filtrates. The most recent detailed investigations on streptococcal pyrogenic activity were reported by Stetson (5) and Watson (6). Stetson reported on the endotoxic activity of Group A streptococci grown in vitro. On the basis of studies with lysates of streptococci disrupted in a Mickle disintegrator, he suggested that streptococci possess an endotoxin similar to that of Gram-negative bacteria. Watson worked with extracellular products of Group A streptococci grown in vivo. Sterile extracts, prepared from rabbit lesions produced by intradermal injection of various types of Group A streptococci, contained pyrogenic toxins which were immunologically distinct. These toxins had other manifestations, causing lethality, cardiotoxic and other tissue damage, and enhancement of toxicity. They were identiffed with the scarlet fever group of toxins.

Pyrogenic specificity of streptococcal exotoxins, staphylococcal enterotoxin, and gram-negative endotoxin.

Streptococcal exotoxin and staphylococcal enterotoxin share several biological properties, including pyrogenicity, lymphocyte mitogenicity, and enhancement of gram-negative endotoxin lethality. These analogies of the toxins prompted comparative pyrogenic studies. When American Dutch rabbits were immunized by repeated intravenous injections of small amounts of staphylococcal enterotoxin, they ex...

Host-parasite Factors in Group a Streptococcal Infections

The factors present in streptococcal lesion extracts (SLE) which enhanced the lethal and tissue-damaging properties of Gram-negative bacterial endotoxins and streptolysin O were identified with the scarlet fever group of toxins. Toxic manifestations attributed to this group of toxins included lethality, cardiotoxic and other tissue damage, enhancement of toxicity, and pyrogenicity. Of these, th...

MODIFICATION OF HOST RESPONSES TO BACTERIAL ENDOTOXINS* I . SPECIFICITY OF PYROGENIC TOLERANCE AND THE ROLE OF HYPERSENSITIVITY IN PYROGENICITY, LETHALITY, AND SKIN REACTIVITY BY DENNIS W. WATSON,$ ProD., AND YOON

The mechanism of tolerance to the pyrogenic activity of Gram-negative bacterial endotoxins is most often attributed to a non-specific increase in the activity of the reticuloendothelial system (RES) (1). Recently, it was shown that Group A streptococcal exotoxins produced biphasic fever responses in rabbits (2). In contrast to the non-specific tolerance induced by endotoxins, three distinct tox...

HOST-PARASITE FACTORS IN GROUP A STREPTOCOCCAL INFECTIONS* PYROGENIC AND O'r~u~R EFFECTS OZ IMMUNOLOGIC DISTINCT EXOTOXINS RELATED TO SCARLET FEVER TOXINS

Pathogenic organisms growing in the dynamic environment of the host can be modified by the mechanism of selection or adaptation. As a result of the host-parasite interaction, they produce substances necessary for their survival in the host and therefore important in the pathogenesis of the infection. When removed from the host to ordinary culture media, the organisms may or may not continue to ...

Toxic shock syndrome-associated staphylococcal and streptococcal pyrogenic toxins are potent inducers of tumor necrosis factor production.

Toxic shock syndrome-associated staphylococcal and streptococcal exotoxins were tested for an ability to induce the production of tumor necrosis factor (TNF). Staphylococcal enterotoxins B and C1, along with streptococcal pyrogenic exotoxin A, all induced TNF production in a dose-dependent manner, with production peaking on the average at 3 days but continuing over the 6 days tested. This time ...
